WBC Member Host: Danielle Pemberton, Sweet Group

Time: 10am - 11am

Meeting Point: 200 Liberty Street, New York, NY 10280

Client: Battery Park City Authority

This project focused on enhancing flood resiliency at Pier A Plaza and The Battery, two key public spaces in Lower Manhattan. The scope of work included the installation of a comprehensive flood barrier system designed to protect the area from future storm surges. This system incorporated deployable flip-up gates, reinforced concrete walls to elevate the existing site grade, and exposed flood walls spanning the Battery Tunnel Underpass and the Brooklyn–Battery Tunnel.

In addition to flood protection measures, the project involved selective demolition, regrading, and the reconstruction of specific landscape elements to ensure seamless integration with the new infrastructure while preserving the park’s historic and recreational character. As part of the NSI (Neighborhood Sewer Interceptor) work, an interceptor isolation gate was installed within existing regulator structures. This gate automatically closed during flood events to prevent storm surge from rising through the interceptor line and flooding street-level areas.
