Volume I, Issue 8 - Week of February 23, 2009
Economic news continues to accelerate as the recession deepens. The stimulus package, now known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, is certainly welcome, but many now realize it’s not the end-all to our economic troubles. The coming weeks will better define what the new Act will mean for New York in terms of specific dollars and projects.
Action is also being taken on other fronts. This includes the Mayor's announcement to retrain and retain laid-off Wall Streeters so when the economy does rebound, the financial boon will be in New York rather than elsewhere.
Finally, with great sadness I’d like to note the passing of Ms. Carolyn Ann Griszell, National Director of Supplier Diversity at Bovis Lend Lease, LMB and a WBC Board Member. She was an inspiration to us all and will be missed. Please note funeral information below.
Renee Sacks, Ph. D.

Seniors Fitness Benefit
Wednesday, March 4, 2009
CityParks Seniors Fitness provides a fun, free way for New Yorkers 60 years and older to stay active through tennis, yoga, and walking each autumn and spring in several of the city’s parks. Produced by City Parks Foundation, this program, the only one of its kind in the city, offers free activities and social experiences that enhance the lives of older New Yorkers and make our parks more inviting. New York has many programs for its youth but only this one for our seniors.
A performance and cocktail reception, to support CityParks Seniors Fitness, will be held on Wednesday, March 4th at B. B. King Blues Club & Grill from 6:00 PM- 8:30 PM. David Pinter (Zwicker Electric) will be making a special musical appearance along with renowned international guitarist Woody Mann. David helped create the Seniors Fitness Program five years ago. The funds raised at the annual benefit have allowed the foundation to not only continue, but to expand.
This is a wonderful opportunity to support NYC park programs on a local level. We hope that you will consider supporting CityParks Foundation; to make a contribution or buy a couple of tickets and enjoy a wonderful night of entertainment in support of a terrific program for our seniors.

Small Businesses Face More Fraud in Downturn
Cash-squeezed, privately held companies are facing another threat in this struggling economy: rising employee fraud.
Employee fraud -- from check-forgery schemes to petty-cash theft -- tends to rise during tough economic times, when workers are feeling financial pressure in their personal lives, experts say. And small companies are especially vulnerable because they often lack stringent internal controls to prevent fraud. Sometimes, managers at affected companies attribute lost funds to lower sales -- never even suspecting foul play.
