Volume I, Issue 48 - Week of December 30, 2009
As our year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the tremendous accomplishments that our industry has experienced. This year has been challenging for many companies that have been forced to consolidate and reorganize. But 2009 also put a start to PLAs, Green building and other initiatives that will continue growing through 2010.
We look forward to expanding our roster of services and planning many exciting networking events for our members. We will also encourage women’s leadership by organizing and participating in learning events like the Groundbreaking Women in Construction conference, taking place in Washington, DC on February 25-26, 2010. We will continue to actively participate in the dialogue with state policymakers and contribute to legislative processes, working to build a better future for Minority and Women Business Enterprises.
The WBCFYI will return in 2010. We wish you and your families a safe and joyous holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

A Career and a Movement, Summed Up in One Word
12/25/2009 - Source: Boston.com
IT IS ONE OF those moments when I feel like a time traveler. I look out the airplane window and watch a young woman on the tarmac directing our jet to its gate. As she waves the signals, I fall into a silent, familiar reverie: “I remember when.’’
What I remember, of course, is a time when no woman would have been hired for this “man’s job.’’ What I remember is when my generation opened the door for hers. If I talked to her about the old days, I wonder, would she listen as politely as if I were talking about walking four miles in the snow to school?

For First Time, Minority Vote Was a Majority
12/25/2009 - Source: The New York Times
Much of the focus on the results of last month’s New York City elections was on Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s small victory margin, despite the more than $102 million he spent to secure a third term. But the elections also produced a seismic political shift that so far has gone largely unnoticed: Black, Hispanic and Asian residents made up a majority of voters in a citywide race for the first time.
A Bank Idea, With Ancient Roots, for Helping Small Businesses
12/23/2009 - Source: The New York Times
To this day, Bart Mitchell is not entirely sure he knows what a merchant bank is. “I guess I think of it as the old-fashioned banker who takes the time to listen to his customer’s needs and help them solve their problems,” he said.

Another Chance for Small Business Loans?
12/21/2009 - Source: The Wall Street Journal
