Volume I, Issue 46 - Week of December 11, 2009
Congressman Chaka Fattah is on the right path in helping minority businesses succeed! He recently urged his colleagues to support federal and private initiatives which provide venture capital in urban markets and minority communities. As a board member of the House Appropriations Committee, working together with the National Association of Investment Companies, they created a report detailing these markets and providing a blueprint for minority businesses in order to reach them.
On another positive note, according to the city Independent Budget Office, New York’s fiscal outlook is not as bad as they thought it was going to be this time of year. The IBO predicts Wall Street profits $59 billion this calendar year, a surprising turn-around since the 2007 and 2008 losses. They are also reporting tax revenues are better now, and job losses aren’t as bad as they were six months ago. The economy seems to be headed in the right direction!
Maryland Governor Deval Patrick launched a Surety Bond Guarantee Program in order to help Minority and Women-Owned construction firms compete for stimulus funds on public construction projects. As of November 11th, he signed the bill and added disabled veterans to the list of people eligible to compete.
The School Construction Authority December 4th event, Work Smart with the SCA, had an excellent turn out. The SCA really does what it says it does, and under the leadership of Sharon Greenberger and her team, it has made meaningful and significant strides to create an equal playing field in the construction industry. Congratulations SCA!
