Going Off the Rails

Stand clear of the soaring cost overruns! The price tag for the MTA's already-way-overbudget Fulton Street Transit Center just went up by another $40 million. The stalled project, which was supposed to cost $750 million, had already mushroomed to $1.4 billion, and its completion date, once 2007, was recently pushed back until 2014. Now, a judge has ruled that the MTA must pay $40 million more than the $100 million it had offered to owners of land it seized to build the jinxed project. |

Good Minority Business Programs
9/16/2009 - Source: Hudson Valley Press Online
Recently, I was asked by the Pennsylvania Black Caucus of State Legislators to come and testify about good minority business programs. They are diligently trying to improve their current program and sought suggestions. We at the National Black Chamber of Commerce were more than happy to respond to their request. It is rare and special when elected officials are focused on this key issue. The interest displayed by our state legislators in Pennsylvania is dearly appreciated. Here are the key elements of our testimony.

Moynihan Station, Maybe
9/18/2009 - Source: The New York Times
Commuters who endure New York's gloomy Pennsylvania Station could be forgiven for shrugging off the latest press conference about a splendid replacement finally in the works. For two decades, we have had these promises, often accompanied by exquisite architectural drawings and elaborate talking points. What may be different now is that there are no models and no razzle-dazzle, only an actual concrete step toward finally moving the station into the elegant old Farley Post Office.
