Volume I, Issue 34 - Week of August 25th, 2009
Save the Date for the annual WBC Dinner! Don't miss out on this opportunity to nominate the outstanding women leading the construction industry. Let's celebrate the champions and trailblazers who are leading the next generation of women builders. For more information about the 2009 Champion Awards, visit www.wbcnyc.org.
More celebrations! Our very own WBC Corresponding Secretary, Cheryl McKissack, celebrates this week as her company, McKissack and McKissack, was announced as lead partner of the new Aqueduct Racetrack development project in Queens.
On another happy note, the federal government awarded small businesses a record $93.3 billion in prime contracts in the 2008 fiscal year. Four new housing developments are also going up in New York City, supported by $60 million in stimulus funding.
The Obama administration has reaffirmed its commitment to ensure that MWBEs have increased access to federal government contracting opportunities. But, this does not mean an end to problems for the MWBE community. United Builders and Contractors, Inc. has filed a complaint with the White House to stop giving funds to the Wichita area until there is sufficient support for African-American contractors. We have a ways to go.
So Let's Start by Nominating Outstanding Women!
You can nominate an outstanding woman today by visiting the link below and following set guidelines. All nominees will be reviewed by our esteemed panel, and winners will be honored at the Third Annual Champion Award Gala and Dinner on October 21st at the Bank of New York Mellon, 101 Barclay Street, NYC. All winners will be included in a print and online publication and directory of Outstanding Women, which will be permanently displayed on the WBC website, www.wbcnyc.org.
More next week...
