March 20th marked a milestone for opening new doors for minority and women business enterprises in New York.
Over 300 guests attended the special evening celebrating MWBEs: Moving Forward at the MTA, honoring Michael Garner, the newly-appointed Chief Diversity Officer of the MTA. The evening featured a carefully-crafted program, which included remarks by elected officials, industry and community leaders.

Comptroller Thompson Says Small Biz is Key to Economic Recovery

SMALL BUSINESSES are a key to restarting the city's economic engine, City Controller William Thompson told a group of Queens business leaders last week.
"Over 98% of our firms have fewer than 100 employees," he said. "New York City is a city of small businesses."
Thompson, who hopes to be the Democratic mayoral candidate in November, said the city needs to look at whether fines, fees or bureaucracy is making it tougher for small businesses to thrive. |

The rebuilding of the World Trade Center site, already hobbled by years of delays and infighting, is facing fresh problems as private developer Larry Silverstein asks the government for crucial financial assistance, according to people familiar with the matter.
The result would be that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the government entity that owns the site, would take on more of the risk of the project at a time when the agency already faces budget restraints to pursue its core transportation and infrastructure missions.

Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri joined Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Guillermo Linares, representatives from the City’s leading construction firms, industry unions and worker advocacy groups to announce the launch of a citywide worker safety campaign to encourage construction workers to properly wear their safety harnesses at all times while working at a construction site. Thousands of posters, banners and brochures - in English, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Hindi and Urdu - are being distributed throughout the City, including high-rise construction sites, designated worker centers, union halls, community centers, telephone kiosks, and the Buildings Department’s five borough offices.
